Sunil Singhania

Sunil Singhania, CFA, is the Founder of Abakkus Asset Management LLP, an India-focused investment management firm established in 2018. Before founding Abakkus, he served as the Global Head – Equities at Reliance Capital Ltd., where he managed large equity portfolios and guided strategic initiatives across multiple business segments, including asset management, insurance, alternative investment funds, and offshore mandates. As the Chief Investment Officer – Equities at Reliance Mutual Fund (now Nippon India Mutual Fund), he played a transformative role in building the company’s equity franchise. Under his leadership, the Reliance Growth Fund (now Nippon India Growth Fund) grew more than 100 times in less than 22 years, becoming one of India’s most successful equity schemes. He was also instrumental in expanding Reliance Asset Management’s global presence by launching India-focused funds in Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, while managing mandates from institutional investors across the United States, Singapore, and other international markets.

With a career spanning several decades, Sunil Singhania is widely regarded as one of India’s most accomplished and respected fund managers. He was recognized by Outlook Business as one of India’s Best Fund Managers in 2016 and 2017, acknowledging his exceptional performance over a ten-year period. His influence extends beyond national borders, having been the first Indian to serve on the Global Board of the CFA Institute, USA, from 2013 to 2019. He is also the only Indian to have been appointed to the IFRS Capital Market Advisory Committee (CMAC) for the term 2020 to 2023, reflecting his global stature and expertise in financial markets.

Throughout his career, Mr. Singhania has made significant contributions to India’s financial and investment community. He was one of the promoters of The Association of NSE Members of India, representing the country’s leading stockbrokers. He also founded the Indian Association of Investment Professionals, now known as CFA Society India, and served as its President for eight years. Within the CFA Institute, he held several prestigious positions, including Chair of the Investment Committee and member of the Nominating Committee, and served for six years on the Standards of Practice Council. He was also a key member of the international committee responsible for revising the CFA Institute’s Code of Ethics handbook, contributing to the global standards of professional conduct in the investment industry.

Sunil Singhania holds a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce from the University of Mumbai and is a qualified Chartered Accountant from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, where he secured an All India Rank. He also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation from the CFA Institute, USA. His extensive global experience, gained through participation in numerous international investment conferences and seminars, has provided him with deep insights into global markets and investment strategies.
